Burkan Engineering

VR fire safety training

Simulation and training in VR

We built a VR fire safety program that lets trainees run drills, practise equipment use and sit assessments inside a building that behaves like the real thing.

Tech

  • Unity
  • Blender
  • ARCore
  • Unity Cloud

Challenge

Live fire drills are expensive, disruptive and limited in what they can safely show. Burkan needed a way to train people repeatedly on realistic scenarios and measure how they actually respond, without lighting a fire.

Result

Trainees rehearse fire response in a space that matches their real environment, and trainers get an assessment of each run instead of a headcount at the assembly point.

What we built

  • A life-size building modelled to building code, with exits, corridors, stairwells and signage placed where the code puts them.
  • Fire equipment and fixtures modelled to specification, so extinguishers, hose reels, alarms and hydrants look, sit and operate as they do on site.
  • Original recorded audio for alarms, equipment and fire, so trainees hear what they would hear in a real emergency.
  • Guided drills for evacuation and equipment handling, followed by scored assessments of the trainee’s decisions and sequence.
  • Built VR-first in Unity, with content managed and updated through Unity Cloud.
